Categorizing Web Search Could Improve Research In Search
Researchers from the Penn State's College of Information Sciences and Technology and Queensland University of Technology have done a study on the classification of web searches. An excerpt from TG Daily Informational searching involves looking for a specific fact or topic, navigational searching seeks to locate a specific Web site and transactional searching looks for information related to buying a particular product or service. The research was the first published work of its kind done using actual searching data, with the aim of real-time classification. Researchers analyzed more than 1.5 million queries from hundreds of thousands of search engines users. Findings showed that about 80 percent of queries are informational and about 10 percent each are for navigational and transactional purposes. The results will perhaps help in providing technologists an insight into the kind of queries to base their focus on. The navigational and transactional queries are sure to peak once mobile internet and business over the net gathers more pace. The mobile revolution will have a big impact on how search evolves in future and perhaps the next big tech company will emerge from there.

Yahoo To Experiment With Google Ads
As it tries to figure out new deals that can keep it independent from Microsoft's impending clutches, Yahoo announced its experiment with Google Ads in which the Sunnyvale California based firm will field Google ads for 3% of its searches. An excerpt from Search Engine Journal Yahoo!'s board of directors is exploring strategic alternatives to maximize stockholder value, including exploration of potential commercial business arrangements. The Company noted that the testing does not necessarily mean that Yahoo! will join the AdSense for Search program or that any further commercial relationship with Google will result. The Company further stated that it would not comment on the nature or timing of any potential relationship. The partnership could be more for giving Microsoft the scare as to what Yahoo could achieve if the Redmond giant does not come to terms in committing a larger deal. The present offer of $44 billion in cash and stocks has reduced marginally owing to a fall in Microsoft's share price. Yahoo is also courting deals with Time Warner in which the media firm would get a stake of 20% by combining its AOL operations with Yahoo. The real competition for Google will be mounted only with the combination of Microsoft and Yahoo. As of now Google rules the online advertising space. But with the future going to be about who rules the mobile space, there is more to be prepared for in future and that is what Microsoft is gunning for.

Google Joins Hands With Salesforce
Google has announced the integration of its Google Apps with Salesforce.com's CRM applications. An excerpt from News.com
Likewise, Google hasn't ruled out working with other partners. "We're committed to advancing the Web as the platform and partners are key to our growth, whether it's a developer doing custom applications and gadgets, a company like Appirio making calendar sharing even easier, or Salesforce.com deeply integrating Google Apps into their CRM products," said Scott McMullan, Google Apps partner lead, Google Enterprise. The move was part of a request that SalesForce was getting from its customers. The product will compete with enterprise offerings over the web that includes Microsoft's CRM efforts. An excerpt from New York Times Google and Salesforce, two of the most important proponents of the idea of delivering software as a service over the Web, have grown increasingly close over the last several months. "The enemy of my enemy is my friend, so that makes Google my best friend," said Marc Benioff, chief executive of Salesforce.com. The move is being heralded by some as Google's first steps to make a serious dent in the enterprise space. Perhaps a much closer merger of Salesforce.com and Google in the future cannot be counted out. SaaS is being seen as a solution for small and medium firms that look to be cost effective while not wanting to invest in the loop of software licenses.

If Microsoft Lowers Bid, Yahoo Could Remain Independent
Time of 3 weeks is what Steve Ballmer gave Yahoo to stop playing and start merging. Now, Legg mason , the institutional investor with 7% stake in the search portal has given indications that it may help Yahoo stay independent if Microsoft lowers its offering. An excerpt from SearchEngineJournal
After Microsoft threatened in a letter this weekend to lower its offer, Bill Miller of Legg Mason said, "Telling the shareholders you're going to take something away from them is not a way to get their support." Miller indicated that the current $29 bid is "not something [he's] too excited about", but didn't say definitively that he would refuse a lower bid: "If Microsoft lowers the price I'm not prepared to say that's better than Yahoo remaining independent," he said. These are testing times for Yahoo cause despite the buzz of its product releases fact is that it continues to lose valuable search share to Google and definitely Microsoft will not be impressed about that. There is the other speculation that Microsoft needs Yahoo more to prep its base for an onslaught of in the web services and to make a dent on the consumer side of mobile offerings. Whatever it may be, the deal may take quite some time to get through all the legal formalities and more delay does not bode well for Microsoft. It is to be seen if the search giant will get its way with a better deal.

Flickr Brings To The Fore Online Video Hosting Service
Video has come to Flickr. The photo sharing site has graduated to an online video sharing site. The offering is currently available to its paying members. An excerpt from TechCrunch Videos are treated the same way as photos and are placed alongside those photos in albums and the main stream. Videos can also be tagged (and geotagged) in the same way as photos. The clips are of maximum 90 seconds duration (or 150MB memory) and this is a way for Flickr to differentiate from being labeled a YouTube clone. An excerpt from Webware The folks at Flickr say the time limits were not a move forced from having to share company resources with Yahoo Video. Kakul Srivastava, director of product management at Flickr says Yahoo Video is all about giving people a place to create their own content channels and drop those large videos. Her vision for Flickr video is simply to popularize the longer version of photos-something they hope becomes an artistic medium, and that people simply get used to taking alongside their still photography. So Yahoo continues to announce its new products and all this inspite of the big take-over war it is having with Microsoft. Is the company trying to make a point about innovation?

Yahoo's HotJobs Service Gets New Search Algorithm
Late last month Yahoo announced a new algorithm for its HotJobs service that would rank jobs on the basis of factors symbolized by REAL (Relevance, Engagement, Availability and Location). An excerpt from Cheezhead Jeff Kinder, Y! Hotjobs senior vice president and general manager, says "Yahoo! has shown that relevance matters in search results, and it's powerful to apply Yahoo!'s search technology to HotJobs and see immediate and significant performance improvements. We believe Yahoo! HotJobs has a distinct advantage as online recruitment evolves and insights and technology play increasingly important roles." The search algorithm will tap lot of information in postings that job seekers would be considering when looking for a job. These would include the availability, the location and also inherently measure how well the job seekers are responding to the results. That is a lot of algorithmic life that Yahoo is injecting in the HotJobs service. It is to be seen if the offering compels other vendors in the job listing market to follow suite.

Google Releases YouTube Analytics Tool
Google announced its YouTube analytics tool called YouTube Insight. The tool providers the uploaders of videos insight into statistics dealing with the geographic areas where the videos are viewed and the metrics associated with the views of the video over time. An excerpt from SearchEngineJournal YouTube Insight gives users two categories of video usage data - page views and popularity. Page views for videos can be displayed by 5 days, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and one year. Page views can be further categorized by country. Popularity is another way showing a video's total page views that is by categorizing it by a number from 1 to 100 100 being the most watched video and 0 for being the least watched. Google Share Price Takes A Tumble
Google's price tumble in the last few weeks has got big focus in the online forums. The question is whether the increased scrutiny that the company is put to may have led to drop in investor confidence. An excerpt from MarketingVox comScore analysis reports slow growth in Google's paid click numbers, reports MarketWatch. Paid clicks rose a paltry three percent in February, according to comScore. The question on most analysts mind is whether the results are a precursor to a slowdown or is it due to the quality increase in clicks as Google claims. Perhaps the results in the next few months will throw more light on the issue. From the quality standpoint it would be fair to give the results more time since quality is an ongoing process. Google has added more cities to Street View. An excerpt from SearchEngineJournal Google's Street View is growing substantially with 13 new cities, both large and small, from around the United States, and Yellowstone National Park! The list of cities includes : Albuquerque (NM), Anchorage (AK), Austin (TX), Cleveland (OH), Fairbanks (AK), Little Rock (AR), Madison (WI), Nashville (TN),Rockford (IL), Richmond (VA), Spokane (WA), St. Petersburg (FL), Tampa (FL), Yosemite National Park (CA). Search Engines: Beyond The Web
Just because search engines are on the web doesn't mean all information should be on the net. The thing is non-web content could also be had. Impossible?! Of course not. Major search engines such as Google have provided a number of clever options for their users. Google users, for instance, can retrieve information from the web, news, maps, books, and other resources. Search engines are working out systems that allow delivery of best results regardless of where the information comes from. This is particularly beneficial for users who are doing intensive research. Web search engines have gone far beyond the scope of just searching the web, they are information engines. Google's gathering information from different sources and combining them into one result set. It's been several months now since Google started this method. But this is just a start. Something big will be unraveled in the near future…All we can do now is to wait for it…
